We are delighted that the third European conference of the European Society of Trauma and Dissociation will be held in Germany – you are cordially invited to join us in Berlin! With the theme of the conference ”There are many walls to take down – on the way to integration” we do not only want to address individual, but also societal aspects of trauma and dissociation. The opening plenary will be given by Dr. Joachim Gauck, who – after German reunification – served as the federal commissioner of the East German Stasi Archives and who continues to make important contributions to the reintegration in Germany. He will speak about working through the past in transformation societies. Furthermore, psychotherapists from Israel, Germany and the USA will share their perspectives on the lasting effects of the Holocaust and World War II in the form of a symposium. In addition, Bethany Brand will speak about the first multi-site, multi-national treatment outcome study of Dissociative Identity Disorder; Michaela Huber will speak to us about state of the art treatment in Complex Trauma, and Marja Rexwinkel will describe treatment interventions addressing attachment problems in severely traumatized families with very young infants.

In inspiring preconference workshops from international high ranked speakers Rick Kluft (USA), Sandra Wieland (CAN) Richard Loewenstein (USA), Andrew Moskowitz (Denmark), Bethany Brand (USA) and Kathy Steele (USA) and Helga Matthess (Germany) you can inform yourself about the state of the art of diagnosis and treatment of dissociative disorders. We are very pleased that Bruce Perry, who inspired us in Belfast with his Keynote speech is coming back offering a three hour in-conference workshop on “An Introduction to the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics”.

We hope that you will also find time to discover Berlin, a wonderful city with a rich cultural heritage. We look forward to seeing YOU in Berlin!

Ursula Gast
(Chair of the scientific program)

Bettina Overkamp
(Chair of organizing committee)

Dear Colleagues,

I am delighted to welcome you to this website. This is the third bi annual European conference that ESTD is organising. After 2 very successful conferences in Amsterdam and Belfast, we very much look forward to our event in Berlin in the spring of 2012.

Delegates have repeatedly praised the atmosphere at these ESTD conferences. Perhaps because of their manageable size, it has always been possible for delegates, new and old, to feel welcome and part of this family of clinicians, researchers and supporters in the field of dissociation.

One of our primary aims at these conferences is to stimulate abstract submissions from new professionals in both the private and public sector. So our programme is enriched by the diversity of presenters from both well known national and international speakers as well as first time presenters. So do consider submitting a paper or workshop.

We are also mindful of our mission statement to provide knowledge and education specifically to those countries in Europe who do not have easy access in this field.

I very much hope that you will be one of the delegates.

Sincerely,

Remy Aquarone
President ESTD

As you may have noticed, there is now a Twitter button on the website. This means that ESTD is now sending out information using Twitter. Twitter is essentially a social networking service that allows people to send short messages (known as Tweets) to grow a community that is interested in the same things. At ESTD, we aim to keep our members and website visitors up-to-date with the latest information on research, training and conferences, as well as getting to know you and what you are doing. If you have events that interest you, or have something on the topic of trauma and dissociation that you would like to share, send it to us at the Twitter name @ESTDeurope and we can share it quickly with our followers (retweeting!). We hope to be posting tweets about the upcoming conference in Berlin, so join up with us and take part. Using this form of networking enables people to connect with each other using smartphones, ipads, laptops etc, without taking up space in your e-mail inbox. If you would like a starter guide to what Twitter is and how it can be used, visit http://tweeternet.com/

By following @ESTDeurope you are instantly connected to the news that all our followers share and can begin building up your own followers (and who you follow). Our followers so far include some of the board members of ESTD, clinicians and researchers from around the world and advocates / bloggers for good mental health. We would love to have more European followers, and can translate simple messages in different languages when retweeting. Please get involved and start telling us what is happening in your area / country. Happy tweeting!

Logical Way of Being – the reality of dissociative identity disorder & other complex dissociative conditions is a new introductory training DVD produced for First Person Plural by Serious Media. It’s now available to order from

A Logical Way of Being is an information and training DVD which provides an introduction to dissociative identity disorder (D.I.D.) and other complex dissociative disorders. It gives the viewer information about their primary features, together with some understanding of their origins in early traumatic attachment and abuse experiences. You will gain insight into what it is like to live with D.I.D. and beintroduced to the support needs of these individuals and the role of psychotherapeutic treatment.

D.I.D. and a similarly presenting dissociative disorder not otherwise specified (D.D.N.O.S.) are thought to be more common than the current low rates of diagnosis in the UK would suggest. Even after being correctly diagnosed individuals have difficulty finding or accessing the help, therapy and support they need. This introductory training resource will help health, mental health, social care and related workers in all sectors and at all levels have a better understanding; use their existing skills and knowledge to better supportindividuals who have or may have D.I.D. or D.D.N.O.S; and be encouraged to learn more about the conditions, their assessment and how to provide the treatment and support needed.

“A Logical Way of Being” produced for First Person Plural by Serious Media features Kathryn Livingston, Melanie Goodwin and Oriel, three experts-by-experience who live with D.I.D. and Dr Mike Lloyd, Remy Aquarone and Sue Richardson, three mental health professionals from the NHS and private sector who are experienced in assessing and treating this and the similarly presenting D.D.N.O.S.

Who is the DVD for?

It is designed primarily for: Staff within the NHS, local authority, voluntary or private sector mental and physical health, social caunity services. This includes anyone working in a nursing, client/patient support, or clinical capacity and anyone involved in service design, management or commissioning.

Further and Higher Education teaching staff and their students on courses which lead to qualifications for work in any of the above capacities.

Others that will find the DVD helpful include:-

Therapists working with such individuals may want to use it as a resource for the psycho-education of their clients.
